gautam gambhir dhoni in final
Chasing 275 for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was never going to be an easy proposition and it was not. But in that glorious attempt and the ultimate achievement lay India's final success to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 trophy at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Sri Lanka could not give Muttiah Muralitharan the farewell he wanted and Mumbai practically wobbled when Sachin Tendulkar was the second wicket to fall to Lasith Malinga with India's score on thirty-one.
Just when it seemed that India's task may have gone out of their hands with Mumbai's son of the soil back in the pavilion, Gautam Gambhir fashioned an innings that he would be proud to look back on, even if he missed a World Cup century by three runs. Gambhir's stand as the anchor was critical for India's chances and his partnership with Virat Kohli first for eighty-three runs and his 109 run stand for the fourth wicket with the Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, were instrumental in ensuring that India stayed on track and favourites to lift the trophy.
Dhoni pushed himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh, took the onus onto himself and ensured he finished it off in fine style with a six off the final ball. In India's final efforts, fifty-four runs were in the end made to look easier by the belligerent partnership between India's Yuvi and Mahi. The hard fought victory yielded ninety-one runs for Dhoni off just seventy-nine balls, earning him the Man of the Match.
